Bethel Temple began in 1918 as a small prayer group in the home of Dr. and
Mrs. R.J. Turner . From the prayer meetings came a Sunday School, and from that,
a church. In 1924 the opera house on Base Street was purchased by the assembly
and named Bethel (House of God). In October of 1936 the building was almost
completely destroyed by fire, with only the exterior walls left standing. The
church met in the local theater until the building was restored and rededicated
on Easter Sunday of 1937. As the ministry has grown, several additions have been
made to the existing brick structure, including a basement under the original
building, hand dug by men in the congregation. With ever increasing growth, more
additions are planned and the sanctuary is undergoing a beautiful remodeling.
The present pastor is Rev. Philip Myers, who is in his eleventh year at Bethel
Temple.
